Thai basil is an essential ingredient in Thai, Vietnamese, Lao and Cambodian cuisines. It has an anise taste that adds delicious aroma and flavour to Thai curries and the leaves retain their scent and taste with high cooking temperatures better than sweet basil varieties.

Yates® Thai Basil is easy to sow and grow and is ideal for including in the vegie & herb patch or in pots, in either full sun or part shade.

Sow Yates Thai Basil seeds direct where the plants are to grow, giving each plant around 20 cm of space. Cover with a 5 mm layer of Yates Seed Raising Mix, keep moist and seedlings will emerge in 5 – 10 days.

Feed Thai basil plants each week with Yates Thrive® Vegie & Herb Plant Food, which is a complete and balanced plant fertiliser that will encourage lots of lush leaf growth.

Plants will mature around 8 weeks after sowing and frequent picking of leaves will help promote a continuous supply. Leaves can also be dried for later use, or wrap sprigs in baking paper and plastic before freezing.

Watch out for snails and slugs, which can rapidly devour young basil seedlings. A light sprinkle of Yates Blitzem® Snail & Slug Pellets around the plants will help attract and kill damaging snails and slugs.

Sow more seeds every few weeks to ensure a continuous supply. Thai basil has very pretty flowers and allowing a few plants to flower adds colour into the vegie patch and will also attract lots of wonderful bees and other beneficial insects into the garden.
