What are the best applications for Magnesium on Gardenias?

I have heard that gardenias and other plants such as citrus like some magnesium in the form of epsom salts and its better to apply in water - can you advise on dose rate please for plants in pots and also in ground, should one rate be higher that the other and depend on size and age of plant, whether its native such as in my native gardenia

Dear Megan,

Epsom salts (Magnesium Sulphate) can be dissolved in water to correct a magnesium deficiency in your plants. Magnesium deficiencies can occur when the pH is too acidic (pH 5.5 or lower) The solution can be applied around the drip line of those plants in the ground. The dilution rate of 20 grams in 1 litre of water should be applied over 1.5 square metres. Avoid application onto the foliage. Applications can be repeated monthly. It is not unusual for gardenias to have yellow leaves at this time of the year as they are heavy feeders and do need nutrients on a regular basis. We would recommend those gardenias in pots be fed in early spring and then again in autumn with a fertiliser such as Acticote+Instant Booster. This fertiliser will provide a long-term balanced feeding solution that is rich in nitrogen and phosphorus to encourage leaf growth and strong root development. The added potassium will encourage good flowering and increases disease resistance. Trace elements are included for added plant health and extra vitality. There is also an Acticote for Natives which is specifically formulated for native plants giving them the necessary nutrients they need to perform well. Apply in spring and autumn. I am sure that you will see a difference in the health of your gardenias once they are fed on a regular basis.
