Lettuce is so handy to have in your kitchen garden, whether you’re whipping up a quick salad or adding some crispy leaves to a sandwich or wrap. Mignonette lettuces are hardy and quick growing and their small heads have leaves that are tender and sweet tasting.
Yates® Lettuce ‘Green Mignonette’ and Yates Lettuce ‘Brown Mignonette’ are 2 heat tolerant varieties that are perfect for growing in a sunny spot in either pots or garden beds and will be ready to harvest in just 8 – 10 weeks.
During July (and throughout the year), seed can be sown direct where the lettuces are to grow or raised in trays of Yates Seed Raising Mix and transplanted when the seedlings are around 3 – 4 cm high. Make successive sowings every few weeks to ensure you have an ongoing supply of these delicious lettuces.
Mignonette lettuces are quite ornamental and growing both the green and brown varieties together in a pot or trough creates a very attractive (and edible) display.
It’s important to keep feeding your potted or garden grown lettuces to promote healthy growth and a great harvest.
Fertilise each week with Yates Thrive® Vegie & Herb Liquid Plant Food, which is a complete and balanced plant food containing nitrogen for vibrant green leaf growth, phosphorus for strong root development and potassium for healthy plants.
Pest watch: keep an eye out for caterpillars on your leafy greens. Caterpillars are voracious chewing pests that can devour entire plants if left to their own devices. Keep caterpillars under control with some regular sprays of ready to use Yates Nature’s Way® Caterpillar Killer (Dipel), ensuring you spray on both sides of the foliage as that’s where caterpillars often hide.
