Salad ingredients like leafy lettuce, baby leaf spinach, spring onions and Asian greens are not only super healthy, they’re compact plants that are easy for kids to grow at home. And when kids are involved in the growing and picking of salad greens, they’re more likely to eat them!
You can grow salad greens in pots or troughs on a sunny balcony, veranda or patio. It’s fun for kids to get their hands dirty and help sow vegie seeds, and exciting for them to watch the first seedlings emerge and the plants grow. Some leafy greens will be ready just 6 weeks after sowing seed and leaves can be picked over many weeks.
Encourage kids to eat their greens by helping them grow their very own salad using this easy step by step guide:
- Use a pot at least 30 cm in diameter or a trough or window box with good drainage holes. The larger the pot the more you can grow and the easier it will be to maintain.
- Place the pot in a sunny position, at least 6 hours of sun a day is ideal. Fill the pot with good quality potting mix, like Yates Premium Potting Mix, up to around 5 cm from the top of the pot.
- Choose some of your favourite salad ingredients, such as loose leaf Yates Baby Combo Lettuce, Yates Baby Leaf Spinach, Yates Tatsoi Spoon Mustard and Yates Spring Onions.
- Sow some seed into the potting mix, following the directions on the seed packs.
- Water the potting mix and keep it moist while the seeds germinate and the plants establish.
- When the seedlings are 5 cm tall, start feeding each week with Yates Thrive® Vegie & Herb Liquid Plant Food, which will provide the salad greens with a balanced diet of nutrients to promote lots of healthy growth.
- You can start picking individual leaves after just a few weeks. And the more you pick, the more leaves will grow.
