Why does my lettuce have yellow and white marks on the leaves?

I'd like to know what it's from in case it isn't safe to eat. Thanks, Judy.

Hi Judy,

There are a few pests that can attack lettuce. From your photos, the damage could be either mites or the Rutherglen bug. Lettuce also gets attacked by leafminer, but the damage is white squiggly marks throughout the leaf which doesn't appear to be the case with your lettuce. Mites are so tiny, you cannot see them with the naked eye. Yates Nature's Way Vegie & Herb Spray Concentrate can be sprayed to control this pest. There is no withholding period with this product. Just wash the lettuce before eating.
