How can I control unwanted raspberry roots

When raspberry roots run away will it kill the whole plant to spray the new growing shoots that are not wanted? I'm assuming it will but how else can they be kept in check? My neighbour is complaining and I might have to rip them all out if there's no other way?

Fruit and Citrus • Weeds

Hi Susan,

I think you are referring to the new plants growing from root suckers. If you spray these new plants, the herbicide will be taken back to the 'mother plant' and it is more than likely to kill it. Perhaps you may need to grow the raspberries in a area of your garden when the plants are free to sucker and away from your neighbour's property.
