Why is my trimmed lilypilly loosing its leaves from the bottom up

There is no sign of chewing, there are some new leaves and some yellow leaves, but the base is virtually bare. What could be causing this?

Australian Natives • Diseases

If the lilly pilly is in a pot it could be losing its leaves due to lack of water or sunlight. If there are curl grubs in the soil in the pot they can cause serious damage to the root system causing the plant to drop leaves. Also check for Scale Insects, and if the soil is sitting too wet it could be a root rot.
