Why are the leaves on my 3 year old blood plum tree curling and it also has black bugs

Blood plum, not sure of official name! Tree only been in 3 years, any help would be wonderful this season but I'm thinking I can't do much to help it this year, would like to know how to avoid these problems for next year

Hi Gail,

There are a number of disease and pests that can attack plums, some being fruit fly, the oriental fruit moth, aphid, mites, fruit spotting bug and brown rot. To control bugs, check regularly at flowering and during fruit development and remove by hand to prevent marking of the fruit. Aphids can be removed by hand or hosed off and can also be sprayed with a product called Yates Nature's Way Vegie & Herb Spray Concentrate. Fruit fly can be controlled by spraying Yates Nature's Way Fruit Fly Control To prevent the spread of fungal disease, spray at budswell with Leaf Curl Copper Fungicide. Hopefully next year your tree will be healthy and produce a load of delicious fruit for you.
