My seedlings are being cut at base and disappearing

My seedlings, in particular petunias, have been either stripped or cut at base of stem or sometimes they have disappeared overnight. I have put a wired basket over one and it still disappeared. I live in Nth Qld. I plant one day and they are often gone the next morning.

Thank you for contacting Yates.

Firstly, check if there are any possums or rodents around, they love having a feast on seedlings overnight.

Also, check around the soil and see if there are any soil-born pests such as cutworm, millipedes or slaters, they could feed on seedlings as well. Unfortunately we do not have any registered product for cutworms but you can try 'Bayer Baysol Snail & Slug Bait' to treat slaters and millipedes in ornamental garden and pots.

Hope this helps and happy gardening.
