Organic thrip control

Some insect pests are very small and you might not notice their presence until they start causing damage. Thrips, pictured left, are tiny, slender sap sucking insects, around 1 – 2mm long, that attack a wide range of plants including roses, azaleas, gardenias, tomatoes and beans.

Symptoms of damage are mottled leaves, browning of petals and also flower & fruit drop. New shoots can become deformed and stunted and thrips can also transmit viruses.

Regularly check plants for symptoms (or thrips themselves if you have great eyesight!) as early control measures will help minimise thrips numbers and the damage they cause.

Yates® Nature’s Way® Vegie & Herb Spray is an insecticidal soap that’s based on natural vegetable oils that will control thrips on a wide range of plants including vegies, herbs, fruit trees, roses and other flowering plants. The soap works via contact action so spraying both the upper and lower leaf surfaces is important. It disrupts the pest’s cuticle layer, which is a barrier that normally protects them from damage and water loss.  Thrips can breed quickly, so spraying every 5 – 7 days will help keep new generations under control.

Yates® Nature’s Way® Vegie & Herb Spray is approved for use in organic gardening by Australian Certified Organic so is ideal for gardeners wanting to control pests organically.

Yates Nature’s Way Vegie & Herb Spray is available in a handy ready to use pack and a concentrate.

In addition to thrips, Yates Nature’s Way Vegie & Herb Spray will also control aphids, mealybug, mites and whitefly.
