Will camellias grow in the Blue Mountains and if so which ones?

I am about to move to Leura and want to plant camellias along a wall that will get the afternoon sun and also in an area to provide provide privacy - possible a hedge. I am taking plants in pots from current home. Can you tell me which variety will grow in the mountains. Also will maraya (bad spelling I know) grow there as well?

Hi Chris,

Camellia sasanqua will grow extremely well in the position you have in your garden in Leura. Camellia sasanqua will tolerate the afternoon sun and grow well as a hedge and give you the privacy you require. Before planting them, make sure you incorporate plenty of organic matter into the existing soil and water well during the hot summer months. It would also be a good idea to put down some mulch on the soil around the camellias to stop the surface roots from drying out. There are some beautiful nurseries in the Blue Mountains that you might like to visit. I am sure they will have a good variety of camellia sasanquas for you to choose from. Murraya paniculata will also make an excellent screen and it too will do well in the location you mentioned in your email. Good luck with the move and enjoy your lovely new garden.
