How to Grow Spider Plant

Commonly known as Ground Morning Glory or Silver Bush, Convolvulus are hardy perennial plants that have various uses in the garden. Not only are they great for pots or hanging baskets with their tolerance to winds, hot conditions and some water stress, they are also perfect to grow on sloping lands, to hang over retaining walls or to just add a bit of colour to the garden.

Keep indoors in a low to brightly lit spot, away from direct sunlight.

Minimal watering

Well drained and moist, not too wet.

Suitable for growing all year round.

How to grow a Spider Plant in a garden

Step 1

Choose a shaded spot in the garden and prepare the planting area well by digging in compost & Yates Dynamic Lifter Soil Improver & Plant Fertiliser.

Step 2

Dig a hole in the prepared area, place the plant in the bottom of the planting hole, gently backfill around the plant’s root ball with soil then water well.

Step 3

Reapply Yates Dynamic Lifter Soil Improver & Plant Fertiliser around the root zone every 8 weeks from spring until mid autumn to promote good soil health.

Step 4

Mulch with an organic mulch, such as bark chips, sugar cane or pea straw and water in well. Do not over water them as they don’t like wet feet.

How to grow a Spider Plant in a pot

Step 1

Choose a pot or hanging basket with good drainage. Position in indoors in low to bright indirect light or outdoors in dappled shade.

Step 2

Fill chosen pots with quality potting mix, such as Yates Potting Mix with Dynamic Lifter.

Step 3

Plant into pot and water in well. Apply Yates Thrive All Purpose Liquid Plant Food every fortnight from spring to autumn to promote healthy plants with lush foliage growth.

Step 4

Do not overwater, feel the soil, if it feels dry then water it.

Growing tips

To help the potting mix and root zone stay moist, potted spider plants can be gently and briefly immersed into a tub of water every month .
Dust the leaves regularly by wielding a small brush. Dust can clog up the pores of the leaves and make it difficult for the leaves to function.
