How to Grow Gazania

Gazanias are great perennial flowers that just burst with happiness. They are great for borders, edgings, in rockeries or just to add that pop of colour and cheer to the garden. They are very hardy and require little water once established. A word of caution is that the original types can self-seed and become weeds, particularly in bushland. Limit seeding by trimming off spent flowers and do not dispose of plants in or near bushland. Better still, look for newer varieties and hybrids, that are much less likely to become weedy and invasive.

How to grow gazanias in a garden

Step 1

Fill starter pots or trays with Yates Seed Raising Mix. Sow seeds, cover, firm down and water well.

Step 2

After sowing, cover with a sheet of newspaper or cardboard to limit the light to the seeds.

Step 3

While the seedlings are growing, choose a spot in the garden that receives full sun and prepare the planting area well by digging in Yates Dynamic Lifter Soil Improver & Plant Fertiliser.

Step 4

Allow the seedlings to grow to at least 5-7 cm before transplanting.

Step 5

When transplanting them into your prepared garden bed, ensure seedlings are well spaced – at least 20cm apart. Water in well.

Step 6

Mulch with an organic mulch, such as bark chips, sugar cane or pea straw.

Step 7

Feed every 2 weeks with Yates Thrive Roses and Flowers Liquid Plant Food.

How to grow gazanias in a pot

Step 1

Choose a pot at least 200mm wide and deep. Position in full sun.

Step 2

Fill the chosen pots with quality potting mix, such as Yates Potting Mix with Dynamic Lifter.

Step 3

Plant directly into the pot by pressing the seeds lightly into the surface of the pot.

Step 4

After sowing cover with a sheet of newspaper or cardboard to limit the light to the seeds.

Step 5

Water gently and keep moist through germination period. After germination remove newspaper or cardboard.

Step 6

Feed every 2 weeks with Yates Thrive Roses and Flowers Liquid Plant Food.

Growing tips

Water well when young, but once established, plants need minimal water.
Plants can become weedy if not controlled. Ensure that you remove spent flowers to avoid self-seeding. Or preferably grow newer varieties and hybrids that are much less likely to become weedy and invasive.
