Gypsophila (Gypsophila repens) or commonly known as Baby's Breath is a popular cut flower for weddings or to add to bunches of roses to create a softer touch. Not only great for cut flowers, it will also soften up the hardest of gardens with its delicate white petalled flowers that sit atop their fine green stems.


How to grow baby's breath in a garden

  1. Choose a spot in the garden that receives full sun.
  2. Prepare the planting area well by digging in Yates Dynamic Lifter Soil Improver & Plant Fertiliser.
  3. Sow seeds directly where they are to grow in rows or in scattered clumps around the garden. Cover with Yates Seed Raising Mix. Firm down and water well.
  4. Water gently and keep moist through germination period. 
  5. Once seedlings are approximately 5 cm, mulch with an organic mulch, such as bark chips, sugar cane or pea straw.
  6. Feed every 1 to 2 weeks with Yates Thrive Roses and Flowers Liquid Plant Food.

How to grow baby's breath in a pot

  1. Choose a pot at least 200mm wide and deep. Position in full sun and is sheltered from wind.
  2. Fill the chosen pots with quality potting mix, such as Yates Potting Mix with Dynamic Lifter
  3. Plant directly into the pot. Cover with Yates Seed Raising Mix.
  4. Water gently and keep moist through germination period.
  5. Feed every 1 to 2 weeks with Yates Thrive Roses and Flowers Liquid Plant Food.

Growing tips

  • Make successive sowings of Gypsophila at 4 weekly intervals to ensure that you get a continuous amount of flowers for picking. 
  • In exposed positions, particularly in strong winds, plants may need some additional support through staking.
