How to Grow Haworthia

When people talk about love at first sight, they must be describing the feeling of seeing Hawthorias for the first time. Haworthias are small, low growing succulents that are stunningly beautiful making it impossible not to fall head over heels. There are also many varieties to choose from, including the popular H. cooperii with its stunning gem like leaves to the H. fasciata 'Superbum' with its white speckled aloe like leaves. How to grow haworthia in a pot

Step 1

Choose a pot just deeper than the existing root-ball and position indoors in a area that receives morning to midday sun.

Step 2

Partially fill the pot with quality potting mix, such as Yates Potting Mix with Dynamic Lifter.

Step 3

Remove the plant from the container, gently tease the roots.

Step 4

Position in hole and backfill with potting mix, gently firming down. Water in lightly.

Step 5

Feed lightly with Yates Dynamic Lifter Liquid in Spring.

Growing tips

Water sparingly in lower light conditions and through the winter period in cooler climates.
Water every two weeks allowing the soil to dry out between watering.
Avoid having the plants sit in water as they don't like having wet feet and are likely to suffer from root rot.
There are many varieties to choose from! Our favourites include:
o H. cooperi – Gem like leaves that are low growing. Feel like hard jellies when touched.
o H. magnifica - Aloe like leaves with lighter green viens on darker green backing
o H. fasciata – Lovely rosettes with speckled white on green leaves, that can get up to 20cm in length.
o H. truncata – The fleshy leaves grow in rows rather than rossettes. The ends are flat and rectangular giving this variety a fan like shape.
Due to their slower growth and preference for limited light, Haworthias are great in terrariums or in small pots around the house.
