How to Grow Correa

There are many different Correa species that range from ground covers to small shrubs that can grow up to 2 metres. The most varieties have a distinctive tubular bloom that generally makes an appearance in winter and early spring. It is a great plant to attract birds to the garden.

How to grow correa in a garden

Step 1

Choose a place in the garden that gets full sun to filtered sunlight. Prepare the planting area well by digging in Yates Dynamic Lifter Soil Improver & Plant Fertiliser.

Step 2

Dig the planting hole twice as wide and to the same depth as the root-ball. Remove the plant from the container, gently tease the roots and cut away any circled or tangled roots.

Step 3

Position in hole and backfill, gently firming down. Form a raised ring around the plant, creating a well so that water will go where it’s needed most. Water in well.

Step 4

Mulch around the base with organic mulch, keeping it away from the main stem.

Step 5

Feed in Autumn and Spring with Yates Dynamic Lifter Soil Improver & Plant Fertiliser to ensure strong root development.

How to grow correa in a pot

Step 1

Choose a pot that is at least twice the size of the selected plant. Position in the garden that receives full sun to filtered light.

Step 2

Fill the pot with quality potting mix, such as Yates Potting Mix with Dynamic Lifter.

Step 3

Remove the plant from the container, gently tease the roots.

Step 4

Position in hole and backfill with potting mix, gently firming down. Water in well.

Step 5

Feed in Autumn and Spring with Yates Dynamic Lifter Soil Improver & Plant Fertiliser to ensure strong root development.

Growing tips

Very hardy plant, and is tough and drought tolerant when established
Even though they are easy to maintain, they do appreciate a light trim after flowering.
Reliable and adaptable species are:White Correa (C. alba) Height 2 m, width 2 m. This variety is salt tolerant.Common Correa (C. reflexa) Height from prostrate to 3 metres.Correa decumbens. Height 30 cm, width 80 cm.Correa ‘Dusky Bells’. Height 80 cm, width 80 cm.

Correas are a group of Australian native plants with beautiful tubular flowers. There are many different Correa species that range from ground covers to small 2 m shrubs, with their peak flowering flush in late winter and early spring.

Correas are adored by nectar feeding birds and are particularly attractive to Australian native bees like blue-banded and carpenter bees. Correas prefer growing in cool to warm temperate climates in full sun to part shade in well-drained soil, and are dry and cold tolerant once established.
