How to Grow Chinese Pistachio

Chinese pistachio is related to the well known nut tree. Its divided leaflets are glossy green during summer and change to intense shades of red in autumn. Chinese pistachio will still colour well when grown in warmer climates. It’s a tough, small to medium sized deciduous tree that can grow up to 8 metres in height.

How to grow chinese pistachio in your garden

Step 1

Choose a sunny spot with well drained soil. Enrich the soil with Yates Dynamic Lifter Soil Improver & Plant Fertiliser. In areas with heavy or clay soil, to help improve soil structure and drainage, add gypsum and mix in well.

Step 2

Dig the planting hole twice as wide and to the same depth as the root-ball. Remove the shrub from the container, gently tease the roots and cut away any circled or tangled roots.

Step 3

Position in hole and backfill with soil, gently firming down. Form a raised ring around the plant, creating a well so that water will go where it’s needed most. Water in well.

Step 4

Mulch around the base with organic mulch like bark chips, sugarcane or pea straw, keeping it away from the trunk.

Step 5

Water deeply, once or twice a week, depending on weather conditions.

Feed in autumn and spring with Yates Dynamic Lifter Soil Improver & Plant Fertiliser to promote strong root development & healthy foliage.

Growing tips

Autumn foliage changes from brilliant orange to crimson. Will colour well in warmer climates.
Bark is dark grey with shallow furrows and this variety is capable of withstanding relatively harsh conditions.
While it is tolerant of most soil types, a well drained soil in a sunny position is preferred. Moderately drought tolerant.
