Tomatoes vary in size, shape, colour, growth habit, lifespan, and other fruit qualities. With so many to choose from, it's important to grow a variety that suits your tastes and your space. Here we explain the differences between our Yates Tomato seed varieties to help you choose one that's right for you.
Indeterminate Tomatoes can grow anywhere between 1.8–3 m tall and need staking or caging.
They produce fruit throughout their growing season and finish up in autumn.
Examples include San Marzano, Grosse Lisse, Improved Apollo, and Tommy Toe.
Determinate Tomatoes generally grow to about 0.5-0.6 m tall (some over 1 m tall) and don't need staking or caging. However, you can still prop them up for particularly windy sites.
They produce fruit that all matures around the same time (generally over a 2-3-week period). Once they have finished fruiting, the plant will not continue to produce and will slowly decline in vigour, so it’s best to remove once they’re done.
Examples of Tomatoes that don't need staking include Patio and Tiny Tim.
