tomato fruit have holes in them

I have given up growing tomatoes (grosse lisse etc) because the fruit is continually damaged - I have used tomato dust, netting etc but the fruit always has holes in them - what product can I use to prevent this damage - I am assuming the damage is caused by white butterflies (the larvae attack the fruit?)- my garden has heaps of white butterflies at the moment & my arm is sore from swatting them with a racquet - please help - I am at my wit's end

Answer: Hi Kevin,
The cabbage white butterfly and budworms will commonly attack tomatoes. There are two products that are very effective against these pests – Dipel Caterpillar and Yates Success.

Yates Success contains spinosad which is a derived from naturally occurring soil bacteria which is effective against caterpillars. It only has a 1 day withholding period which means you only need to wait one day after spraying before you can pick.

Dipel Caterpillar Killer also contains a naturally occurring bacteria and it does not have a withholding period.

If there are butterflies present around the tomatoes and fruit are present I suggest you may like to start applying either Success or Dipel within 7 days as the eggs will be hatching at around that time.
