Medium_img00316-20111004-1702 Bark problem with pittosporum (silver sheen)

The bark is being striped away, i'm not sure if is a pest or disease, and what remedy should i use. I live in Montrose, Vic and the trees are 3 years approx, with nor previouse problems. Have seen only snails in trees so far.

Answer: Hi Paul, Pittosporums can be affected by collar rot and root rot if the root area is very moist. They prefer free draining soil and plenty of sunlight. Anti rot can be sprayed onto the foliage. It is a systemic product which is translocated throughout the plant.

It is difficult to tell from the photo whether the damage is caused by the root rot or by possums or weevils or beetles. If you look at the plant in the early evening you may be able to detect some insects present. Place a piece of paper below the damaged area and lightly tap the trees.
