our little gemmagnolia is about 4m tall neighbour wants to cut 1m off, will it harm tree when can it be cut?

neighbours compalin of leaves in pool and height bloccking view. I am happy to trim it because they are good neighbours just concerned that a metre or so at once would harm the tree. He wants to do it soon but is a radical trim better in spring or autumn. Is thatkinder to the tree. when is the best time to cut it back if at all?

Answer: Hi Joanne,

Thank you for contacting Yates.

Pruning the tree down by one metre in one go can have a drastic effect on it. To reduce the stress consider applying Yates Water Wise DroughtShield a week before pruning. Once you prune down the tree, the foliage that is usually not open to full sun will be exposed, and direct sunlight on it may cause some damage. But with Drought Shield the damage should be minimum as it will work as a sunscreen. Do water it regularly.

Avoid fertilising for a couple of months from the time of pruning and then apply Dynamic Lifter Soil Improver & Plant Fertiliser to encourage new growth.

All the very best!

Kind regards,

Eric
