Answer: Hi Michael,

I think the key to growing healthy tomatoes is to have the soil just right for them. Preparation of the soil is the key. To start with, dig in lots of cow manure as well as some blood and bone and compost. Let the mix settle in, turning each week to keep it well aerated. Do this about a month before planting out your tomatoes. Check the pH of the soil. Tomatoes tend to like a sweeter type soil so add some lime before putting in your seedlings. Having the right soil pH and enough calcium in the soil will prevent diseases such as blossom end rot. Once the little tomato plants start to grow and produce flowers, you will need to keep the nutrients up to them in order to grow a successful crop. We would suggest using Thrive Tomato Liquid Plant Food. This product can be used on a weekly basis while the plants are actively growing.
Your beans would also benefit from growing in the same nutrient rich soil. Our soils in the southern states are still a little cool for growing beans. Once spring arrives in a few weeks time you will be able to sow your climbing bean seeds. Keep them well fertilised as well with a good quality liquid fertiliser such as Thrive.
Enjoy planning and planting your summer crops. It is such fun harvesting your own crops and eating them is even better.
