Preparation to Plant Hyacinth Bulbs

Hi,
I have about 20 Hyacinth bulbs ready for planting now.

What kind of preparation should I be doing to the soil before planting?

After the bulb is planted, do I need to put mulch ontop of the bed where I planted the bulb? I am in Sydney btw.

How often do I need to water them after planting them between now (April) till Spring?

Need your advise!

Thanks

Answer: Hi Penny,

Hyacinth bulbs require about 6 weeks in the refrigerator crisper before planting and are best planted in April or early May. They should be planted 15 cm deep and 15 cm apart. They prefer a sunny position in fertile well drained soil. I would not place mulch on the surface as this may cause the bulbs to rot. Try to keep the soil moist but do not over water. Give liquid feeds of soluble fertiliser when the buds appear.

Attached is a link with some further information on growing bulbs.
