When is the best time to prune my Protea in Sydney?

When do we prune a Protea in Sydney? Thanks, Angelo

Dear Angelo,

It is rarely necessary to prune proteas. Sometimes when a plant becomes leggy because of too much shade it may need light pruning. This is best done in early spring, after flowering has ceased. The most basic way to prune is to deadhead. Use harder pruning to shape plants. Cut back lopsided or stretched plants by up to one-third, which may reduce the number of blooms the following year.
