Roma tomatoes are often known as Italian tomatoes however it seems that they originated in the United States in the 1950s. Romas have the Italian ‘San Marzano’ tomato in their family tree and there are also Italian Roma varieties now available, which complicates things. Whoever claims them, Roma tomatoes are absolutely delicious and have deep red, pear shaped fruit. They’re ideal for cooking, bottling, sauce making and sun drying but are also perfect eaten fresh in salads.
Tropical and sub-tropical gardeners can find a warm windowsill or patio to start some Yates® Roma Tomato seeds off in trays or small pots during June and then transplant them out into a sunny spot in the vegie patch or medium sized pots when they’re around 5 – 7 cm high. Yates Roma Tomato seed can also be sown direct where they are to grow. This variety does not need staking.
