Can you grow lychees from seeds in the fruit

I'm trying to grow lychees from the seed of the fruit. Is there any special way that I may try?

Dear Deborah,

It is possible to grow lychee from seed, but it will take many years for the plant to reach a stage where it is producing fruit. Almost all lychees are propagated by air layering. Some plants are grafted. Growing from seed is such a long process and probably not economically viable. It would also be good to know the variety of lychee you are trying to propagate. All varieties grown in this country are of Chinese origin. Lychees are self pollinating, flowers occuring in long panicles from branch ends, with male and female flowers in the same panicles. You only need one tree to produce fruit.
