Just starting off...

My partner and I have just recently moved into an old house on his family’s sheep farm. With just a few neglected fruit trees and some bare garden beds, this place needs a yard/garden overhaul! As a matter of priority, we have built ourselves a veggie patch, which we hope will be large enough to provide us with almost all of our fresh food requirements.

Using some old redgum fencepost offcuts from around the homestead, we have built raised beds. With lots of sheep manure around, we have turned a few wheelbarrow-fulls into the soil which is mostly sandy. The patch we have selected recieves morning and midday sun, but is shaded in the mid-late afternoon.

After spending $75 on seeds (Yates of course!) from our local hardware store, we have planted our favourite veggies including carrot, zucchini, corn, capsicum, beans, beetroot and cauliflower. I also love salads in summer so we’ve also planted spinach, rocket, mixed lettuce and cucumber.

Planning the layout of the seeds in the veggie patch was no easy task! We are attempting to be pesticide free – so companion planting will hopefully be our friend. After consulting the Yates companion planting guide, we hope all of our seeds will find themselves next to friendly neighbours!

Now we anxiously wait for the seeds to sprout…
