How to Choose Your Seeds

Whether you’re a beginner gardener or an experienced green thumb, Yates has something to suit your needs. Not sure where to start? Our helpful filters lets you choose what works best for your garden. Whether you’re growing in a sub-tropical, temperate or cool climate, need plants that are a certain colour, will grow in the shade or sun, or can be sown at certain times of the year, we can help you make the right choice.

The Best Time to Plant Seeds

Early spring is the best time to plant summer vegetables such as Capsicum, Cucumber, Tomatoes and Microgreens, as well as many herbs that will grow throughout the summer and autumn. Most flower seeds are best planted in spring, including Sunflowers, Marigolds, Petunias and Nasturtium.

Winter vegetables such as Cabbage, Carrots and Beetroot are well suited to autumn planting, and will be ready to harvest in winter.

Seeds can still be planted in winter too; Spinach, Onion and Peas all thrive in cool conditions, so you can still get in the garden during the cooler months.

Flowers such as Californian Poppies, Celosia, and Dianthus can be planted in the summer and will grow well in the heat, giving you bright flowers through the hottest time of the year.

How to Sow Seeds

When planting vegetables, herbs, flowers, and microgreens, prep the soil with Yates Dynamic Lifter Organic Soil Improver & Plant Fertiliser. Packed with organic matter that encourages earthworms and beneficial soil microorganisms, it also contains slow-release nutrients from manure, fish meal, blood and bone and seaweed to help gently feed your plants as they grow.

After soil preparation, make a shallow trench with shovel or trowel. Some seeds can be planted directly into the soil, while others may require raising in a tray before planting in the garden - check on the packet how to treat your seeds. Most seeds should be planted at a depth double their own size, but fine seeds should be sprinkled on the soil, before adding another fine layer of soil or Yates Seed Raising Mix. Water in well and keep moist.

Feed herbs and vegies regularly with Yates Thrive Natural Vegie & Herb Liquid Plant Food. For flowers, feed with Yates Thrive Roses & Flowers Liquid Plant Food.
