About Bent Grass Varieties

Bent grass (also known as New Zealand Bent, Browntop or Highland Bent) was at one time the most widely grown cool-season grass, either by itself or in grass seed mixtures. While it makes a beautiful, evergreen, fine textured lawn, and is preferred for top-class golf greens, it is less favoured by home gardeners these days as it requires a continual high level of maintenance.

Bent grass is best suited to cool–temperate or cold climates, but will grow in warmer areas provided plenty of water is applied throughout summer. It prefers full sunlight but will tolerate partial shade and is resistant to wear when very well established. Sow seed in early spring or autumn. Seedlings emerge in seven to ten days, sometimes sooner in favourable weather.
