How late in the season can you prune Roses?

My in laws have 6 Rose bushes that did not get pruned this year. Is it too late to prune them now or if so, perhaps just a light cut back? I have also noticed a few suckers coming from what I presume is the root stock. How do I deal with that problem?

Answer: Hi Maria,
It is too late now to give your roses a hard prune but there is no reason why you cannot remove any unproductive stems or stems that may have died back and that will tidy up the rose bush. You can definitely remove those suckers from below the root stock as they will take energy from the rose bush.

I am sure your roses are flowering beautifully now so enjoy the blooms and after Christmas you can give the roses a summer prune. This will mean cutting the stems back by one half. Give your roses another feed at this point to encourage new growth and new flower buds. We would suggest applying Dynamic Lifter Plus Organic Flower Food. This is a slow release fertiliser that will give your roses all the nutrients they need to power on and produce those stunning blooms. To keep the moisture in especially during the hot summer months, you might like to put down some sugar cane mulch. Happy rose growing.
