Answer: The first thing to you before you prune anything is to make sure your secateurs are clean and sharp. Start pruning by removing old unproductive canes at the base. You can use a saw if they are too large to cut with secateurs. The cut out any shoots that are: dead, crossing and too thin to carry flowers. Then shorten back the remaining branches by at least a third. Cut back just above an outward-facing bud. Then remove all remaining leaves from the plant. Put the leaves in a plastic bag and dispose of them (not in the compost), this will help stop diseases carrying over into next year.
Once you have removed the leaves give the stems and soil a spray with lime sulfur to clean up any insects and fungal spores.
You can give them a feed with Yates Dynamic Lifter in spring when they start growing again, to support a new flush of flowers. You can also use Acticot for Roses and Flowers. This is a controlled release fertiliser that will provide your plants with nutrients for up to 6 months
