Hi, my boss has a small zanzibar but you can see the crown of the bulb. I thought this was similar to a clyclad but the plant shop told me this weekend that in fact it should be covered in soil. can someone please confirm this for me? Thank you

Answer: Hi Marilyn, yes this plant is related to the cycads, but doesnt grow a large crown or ‘trunk’ in the same way. It is however normal to be able to see the top of the crown on a mature specimen as it expands, and there is no need to cover with soil unless the roots have been accidentally exposed.
