Plant insect pest control safe to use around pets.

I have a collection of succulent plants in pots, mostly growing outdoors but some indoors. What would you recommend to control insect pests (e.g. snails, mealy bugs, caterpillars, aphids) that would not be harmful to my young cat who sometimes decides to have a chew on the leaves.

Answer: Hi Jane,
It is probably not a good idea to let your cat chew on the foliage of your plants. I know that can be easier said than done as cats tend to have a mind of their own.

We would suggest the best product to use would be a Pyrethrum spray. Pyrethrum is a contact spray and will kill the pest on contact. Pyrethrum will control insects such as aphids, caterpillars and mealy bug.

Be careful when using a product for controlling snails, particularly as your cat appears to be an inquisitive one. It would be best to look at natural controls for snails such as making it difficult for them to access your succulents. Sharp stones or scoria placed on top of the pots around the plants will hopefully deter the snails from getting to the foliage.

You will still have to be careful when spraying that your cat is not close by. Put her/him inside when you have to spray. Once the product has dried on the leaf, it is safe for your cat to return to the area. Pyrethrum tends to break down quickly when exposed to sunlight and moisture.

Have you thought of buying some cat grass for your pet. They just love chewing on it and it is good for them.
