Bugs eating my palms!!

Help! I have bugs approx 1cm long turning my foxtail palm trunk to brown goo. They are black with light brown splotches on them. I found them when pulling a dead frond off and that revealed all th burrows. What do I kill them with?

Answer: Hi Ben,
There are a number of caterpillars that are attracted to the foliage of palms such as the orange and yellow palmdart but there is also a beetle called the palm leaf beetle that can seriously damage the foliage of palms. These beetles are about 10mm long, black with a yellow/brown band near the head. We would suggest using a Yates product called Baythroid Insecticide. Spray with this product when pest is first noticed and repeat every 7-14 days until infestation is under control.
