muddy garden, no grass

If I lay grass seed in my muddy back garden should I cover it with mulch? I have dogs which run round the garden all day and are churning up the soil even more. Is there something else I could do?

Answer: Hi Sue,
For a successful lawn it is important to apply the lawn seed firstly in one direction (north south) and then apply the remaining half in the other directions (east west). Rake into the surface, in one direction only to ensure a more even result. Avoid all traffic including dogs on the area until the lawn is well established. You may have to fence off an area so the dogs do not disturb the newly sown area. Can you sown half the lawn in Spring and the other half in Autumn?
