Why are most flowers on Yates Qld Blue P'kin males? - I only have 4 pumpkins on very healthy vines. Tks Jean

I hand-fertilised the the female flowers - only about 7 have appeared

Answer: Hi Jean
Great question.
You will generally get more male then female flowers to make sure there is enough pollen around to fertilise the females. While pollinators are a great adaptation they not 100% reliable so making sure there is plenty of pollen around ensures that the females will get pollinated with the right type of pollen. As the plant ages it will generally put on more female flowers and ensure you get a good harvest of pumpkin.
