How long after applying gypsum to clay soil can you start planting.

Submitted: 08:04PM, 29 Apr 2010
Answer: Dear Debbie,

I am assuming you have a clay soil and this is why you are applying Gypsum.

The main reason for applying gypsum is to penetrate the clay particles and loosen and break up the clay. It does not work instantly but it can be applied on a yearly basis over a 3 year period. Simply apply to the soil surface and water in thoroughly afterwards. It does not affect the pH of your soil and won’t harm or burn existing plants. As gypsum does not contain any major plant nutrients, you will still need to add some well composted organic material to your soil. You can then safely plant into the soil.
