Magnolia sprouting from base.

I have a Magnolia that we planted last winter about 4 foot tall. It flowered last spring and continued to grow but has started sprouting from the base over summer. Is this indicative of a problem with the tree?

Answer: Hi Caroline, hard to say without seeing, but if the top growth looks ok I wouldnt worry, it’s just the tree’s way of making more branches, although it may have been caused by some sort of injury to the trunk or general stress to the tree.
