Holly
We have a weeping silver birch which is about 1.5m tall and very overgrown. When is the best time to prune it and how hard can you prune it back?

Answer: Dear Holly,
It would be best to wait till winter when the plant is in its deciduous stage so you can see the existing framework of the tree. You will then be able to see if there is any dead wood that needs to be pruned out and at the same time be able to shorten the branches that have grown too long. The weeping birch will not require a heavy prune, just a tidy up to maintain its shape.
