how to tell the difference between new roots and new flower spikes on moth orchids

Submitted: 12:57PM, 19 Feb 2016
Answer: Hi Kathryn,

Thank you for contacting us regarding your Moth Orchids. It is so exciting to see the spikes popping out, they are full of promises.Flower spikes and roots can appear at the spot in between leaves, the colour can be very close as well green with some purple tin. In general you should be able to tell by the angel the spikes go, flowers toward up while roots go done. One more easy way to identify flower spikes is the tip is not as smooth and pointy as new roots, it appears to be a more “mitten” shape.

Hope this would help and happy gardening.
