I would like to grow day lilies from seed but my seeds are all orange, not black as I believe they should be.

The pods are split open so look ready, and seeds are dropping. Are the orange seeds viable? I currently have some in a seed tray between damp paper towels, so far no sprouting. The seeds are from day lilies of various colours. Is it a matter of patience or are they not going to sprout?

Answer: Seed saving can be a fun and rewarding experience. Daylilly seeds should be black and glossy, perhaps yours are not quite ready for harvest yet.
Daylilly seeds need a certain about of chilling to germinate. You can achieve this by planting in autumn or putting the seeds in a plastic bag and leaving them in the fridge for a month.
As you have many different coloured flowers and these are likely to be hybrids, the colour and size of the flower will be random. It will also take three years for the plant to reach maturity.
