Answer: Hi Heather,

It is disappointing to find you have lots of fruit but little or no pulp inside. You don’t mention how old the vine is or whether it is a grafted or seedling specimen.

Sometimes if the weather is hot and dry and the vine does not receive enough moisture, this can affect the quality of the fruit. I would have thought though, where you live in Buderim, you would have received ample rainfall during the summer months. Lack of nutrients could contribute to the vine producing fruit with little pulp. When the vine is flowering apply a good quality fertiliser such as Dynamic Lifter Plus organic based fruit food. This can be applied in spring and again in autumn. There is a virus disease called ‘woodiness of passionfruit’ that causes the fruit to be deformed, have a really thick rind and produce a small amount of pulp. You will notice that the leaves appear paler green than normal healthy leaves and some mottling will appear throughout the leaf. This virus is spread by aphids which attack the flowers in the early stages. It is important to control pests such as aphids when they are first noticed with a pyrethrum spray.

If your vine is only young, perhaps next season when it is more established, it will be more mature and produce a better crop for you. Keep the vine well watered, well fertilised and free of pests. Good luck.
