Have grafted established fruit trees with graft well above the soil line the trees have developed fresh branch

branches with thorns. Is this coming from the root stock Is this normal or abnormal and what can I do about it ,also fruit seems to be getting stung .what should I spray with ,I have lots of birds visit my garden so wish to be bird friendly

Answer: Hi Janet,
Any branches that are produced below the graft should be removed as this will be coming from the root stock.

Fruit fly can be controlled using Nature’s Way Fruit Fly Control. This product contains spinosad which is derived from a naturally occurring beneficial soil bacteria and a protein and sugar based bait to attract the flies. It is applied to the truck or lower foliage (not the fruit) weekly.
