Klaus
Medium_pink_crab_apple_3 I have 2 crabapples which I want to prune.

both trees have grown quite large this season. Do I prune too give them shape or do I do more severe pruning too stopthem grownig too large. Do I remove some of the wood from inside the tree too open them up. When is the time too prune?

Answer: Hi Klaus,
It is possible to lightly prune the crab apple now, however it is easier to shape the tree during the winter months when the plant is dormant. Choosing a vase shape will allow more light into the centre of the tree and help ensure the health of the tree is maintained. Removing up to a third of the tree this winter and following up each year with a lighter prune may allow you to shape the tree to your required height.
