What has happened ... Pear is still hard but cracked ... Had water 2xWeek & covered to stop birds

Answer: Hello Andrea,

This does sound like a case of Black Spot (or ‘Pear Scab’), which may result in split fruit, occurring more severely in poorer seasons.

The best management of the disease is through preventative action: correct pruning and measures to remove diseased material from the tree and its surrounds (do not compost diseased material), applying Yates Liquid Copper Fungicide according to label directions (ascertain your variety’s sensitivity to the product before application), and feeding with a complete fertiliser such as Yates Dynamic Lifter Plus Fruit Food to help maximise the tree’s natural resilience to pest and disease attack.
