Water running off grass. Lawn is green but does not absorb any rain

Submitted: 10:02PM, 15 Sep 2015
Answer: Hi Sharen

The most likely cause for this is that the lawn is compacted. It has developed a hard cap that won’t allow the water to penetrate the surface.

To overcome this issue, you need to aerate the lawn, which can be done using a garden fork. The tines can act as spikes. Push into the lawn and wiggle to open up the surface. You can apply sand as well to keep the holes open and more free draining.

If it’s a more serious issue such as a clay pan, then you will need to look at other options.

Kind regards
Ben
