Answer: Hi Suzy, this sounds like it might be a wooly aphid problem. years of damage eat away at the tissue and can cause ring barking if the tree is under stress and cannot grow new bark tissue quickly enough. Spray the affected lesion throughly with pest oil or Natrasoap to control these insects. have sent a picture to your regular e-mail.other parts of the tree may carry the pest during the growing season and should also be monitored and sprayed if need be. Colonies in cracks in the trunk can also be painted heavily with methylated sprits. If left for too many years bacterial canker can enter the tree through the splits in the bark caused by this insect.
