One of our Azalea plants looks like it has rust on the leaves, please advise what I can use to remedy the prob

I do not like spraying our plants as we have grandchildren and animals come to our house, so I need a safe remedy that I can use, the Azalea was a cutting from an original plant about 50 years old in our garden.

Answer: Hello Heather,

Two common pests which cause damage, looking similar to rust, on azaleas are spider mite and lace bug. If you could please provide a photo or two showing the upper- and under-side of affected leaves we should be able to narrow it down further for you.

For spider mites on ornamentals we do have Yates Nature’s Way Vegie & Herb Spray. Yates Nature‚Äôs Way products are based on natural, low toxic & organic ingredients.

Remember to keep your plant nutrition in check to maximise resilience to pest attack. For azaleas, apply Yates Dynamic Lifter Plus Flower Food, and ensure soil pH is maintained between 5.5 and 6.0 for optimal plant health. Soil pH can be lowered if necessary using Yates Soil Acidifier Liquid Sulfur.
