have gardenias in pots which have new shoots but there are yellow leaves with dark spots on lower section!

Answer: Hi Bruce,

Sorry to hear that your gardenia standards are not doing so well.

There are a number of pests that can attack gardenias. Are the brown spots on the leaves raised and can they be removed by rubbing off? If so, this could be a pest called scale. It is brown in colour and is a sap sucking insect. It can be controlled with a product such as PestOil or Confidor. Scale can increase in numbers over a period of time so it is best to get it under control so as not to affect the health of the plant.

If the leaves are yellowing, this is a sign of nutrient deficiency. It is not unusual for gardenias to have yellow leaves as they are heavy feeders and need to be feed on a regular basis. Dynamic Lifter for Roses is an excellent fertiliser to use.

A feed of Thrive will also help boost the plants as they have been under some stress.
