what are these little black bugs that are curling & killing the leaves of my lychee tree

The bugs leave a sticky substance on the leaves that's a redish brown colour. I've also found little white shell looking things on the trunk aswell. Can you please tell me what it is & how to combat the problem. We have bought the Yates Pestoil ready to use spray but I'm worried it might shock my lychee & kill it.

Hi April,

The 'little white shell looking things' is likely to be scale. Scale is sap sucking insect that does produce honeydew which then develops into a mould. PestOil is registered to control scale on stone and pome fruit, but not testing has been done on lychee. You can hand remove the scale on the stems with a gloved hand or you might prefer to use a soft toothbrush and rub the scale off the stems. The little black bugs sound like aphids. Yates Pyrethrum Insect Pest Killer Concentrate is registed to control aphid on fruit trees. This product when sprayed will kill the pest on contact. They also suck sap and can cause the leaf to curl. Keep your lychee healthy by applying an organic liquid fertiliser called Yates Dynamic Lifter Liquid.
